1. racism- "It is a matter of the people of Clybourne Park believing, rightly or wrongly, as I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities" (118)

In Act II scene 3 of A Raisin in the Sun, Linder, an associate from Clybourne Park, the community Mama bought a house in, is speaking to Ruth, Beneatha, and Walter. Linder explains that the whites who are dominant in Clybourne Park don’t want them there. They went so far as to try and buy the house from Mama exceeding the original price. Linder states that there should be an orientation between the family and community before they move in due to "the way things run" around the community. This pertains to racism because the community doesn’t want blacks moving in. Walter becomes extremely angry and forces Linder to leave. Shortly after the escapade, Mama walks in. When the situation is explained to her she takes it lightly and doesn’t care.

7) Dignity – “ A job. Mama, a job? I open and close car doors all day long. I drive man around in his limousine and I say, “ Yes sir; no, sir; very good sir; shall I take the drive, sir?” Mama, that ain’t no kind of job… that aint nothing at all. Mama, I don’t know if I can make you understand” (73)

In act one scene two Walter is loosing his temper he feels that his life is in peril and theirs nothing left for him. As he gets into a deeper and deeper fight with his mama he explains his notions behind his feelings and how dignity is playing a role in this dissatisfaction. His job he feels is a major contributor to these mal feelings of life. Him being bossed around and controlled by other men isn’t a dignifying measure and what makes this situation even more so of a displeasure is that the only thing that separates these men from Walter is a salary.

"Mama:When the world gets ulgy enough a women will do anything for her family.
Walter: You don't know Ruth, Mama, if you think she would do that.

17. Dysfunctional family- “No- there’s something come down between me and them that doesn’t let us understand each other and I don’t know what it is. One done almost lost his mind thinking ‘bout money all the time and the other done commence to talk about things I cant seem to understand in no form or fashion. What is it that’s changing, Ruth.” (52)

In Act 1 Scene 1, Mama is talking to Ruth about how she feels that she has no connection with her family and that she doesn’t understand what seems to be happening or why everyone is drifting apart. Mama is concerned because all Walter thinks a bout is money and opening his liquor store and she gets angry with Beneatha because she says that she doesn’t believe in god and Mama feels very strongly about god and is very religious. Mama gets mad because she feels her own daughter is disgracing her beliefs. Mama feels that her children don’t appreciate her feelings and opinions.

22. betrayal-"Gone, what do you mean Willy is gone? Gone where? You mean he went by himself- to take care of getting the license. You mean maybe he didnt want too many people in on the business down there? You know willy he got his own ways. maybe you was late yesterday and he just went down there without you. maybe he just got sick. He's somewhere- he's got to be somewhere. we just got to find him me and you got to find him.We got to! whats matter with you Walter! When a cat take off with your money he dont leave you no road map."

In this DQ Walter is speaking to Bobo in his house saying that willy didnt betray them and run off with there money and that there has to be an explination for it. But Bobo already knows that willy is long gone with all the money that they had. Walter is still wont belive him and when he finnaly does he goes up to his room alone and starts stareing at the ceiling trying to figure out what to do.

18. Atheism- “Beneatha: Mama, you don’t understand. Its all a matter of ideas, and God is just one idea I don’t accept. It’s not important. I am not going out and be immoral or commit crimes because I don’t believe in God. I don’t even think about it. Its just that I get tired of Him getting credit for all the things the human race achieves through its own stubborn effort. There simply is no blasted God-there is only man and it is he who makes miracles!”

Beneatha is arguing with Mama about God, and Mama gets very upset when she tells her mother that she doesn’t believe in God, and slaps Beneatha. Mama is a very devout Catholic, and she made sure her children were raised Catholics as well. To have Beneatha turn down God was almost like a slap in the face to her mother, which is exactly what she got in return. Mama wants Beneatha to know that God will always be there, and she makes sure she knows it by forcing her to repeat the phrase “In my mother’s house there is still God.”

20. Abortion-
MAMA-"do u know your wife is expecting another baby? I think Ruth is thinking 'bout getting rid of that child...When the world gets ugly enough-a woman will do anything for her family. The part that's already living."(74-75)

In Act I scene 2 of A Raisin in The Sun, MAMA speaks with Walter about Ruth's Pregnancy; explaining the fact that Ruth may "get rid" of the child for financial reasons, and for the sake of the families well being, if Walter doesn't step up and take care of his responsibilities. As she gets more in depth with the situation Walter doesn't want to believe that Ruth would get an abortion so he remains speechless. WALTER "Ruth"-(He can't say nothing)
His silence displaces the shock and confusion in his mind for future decisions in which now have to be made.

13- Poverty

Ruth:"Shoot-these here rich white women do it all the time. They dont think nothing of packing up they suitcases and piling on one of them big steamships and swoosh!-they gone, child."
Mama; Something always told me I wasnt no rich white woman." (44)

In Act I scene one in Raisin in The Sun, Ruth and mama are talking about the check that is coming in the mail for them and what they are going to do wiht it. Ruth and Mama are comparing themselves to rich white women, and how they have never or will never live like them. They think that white women take there money for granted. Mama begins to talk about how she bought the house years ago and wanted to fix it up with her husband but she never got around to it because they didnt have enough money to even support their kids. That is the same problem that Ruth and Walter are dealing wiht now. They dont have alot of money to legitimately support their family.

5. Alcoholism
Travis: “What’s the matter, Daddy? You drunk?” this quote was said by Travis and directed towards his father when they are at home right before Travis is going to sleep. This quote is showing how alcoholism is a very scary thing and when you have a family it affects the whole thing. This is sad because his 7 year old son knows that his father is a drunk and he must think about it all the time. Alcoholism is a very dangerous thing and no one in his family agrees with what he does especially mama. They all think it is a ridiculous way to think about things and relax. They don’t understand why it helps him cope with things and that can tare a family apart.

Vincent-

Culture is one major theme in Rasin the Sun. The Youngers, being African, respect their native country. Although some of the Africans in the community mock their country and claim it backwords. After Benetha cuts her hair it looks alot more kinky. "George- What in the name of! Ruth-(touching her hair) Girl have you lost your natural mnd!? Look at your head! George- What have done to your head, I mean your hair." George blended into his white community and likes Benetha's hair long and straight rather than her natural short and kinky hair. He also found the Norwegian dress to look like a "ritual cloth".

4.Nigeria

pages 56-57

"MAMA: What's his name?
BENEATHA: Asagai, Joseph. Ah-sah-guy... He's from Nigeria.
MAMA: Oh, that's the little country that was founded by slaves way back...
BENEATHA: No, Mama- that'e Liberia.
MAMA: I don't think I never met no African before.
BENEATHA: Well, do me a favor and don't ask him a whole lot of ignorant questions about Africans. I mean, do they wear clothes and all that- "

When Mama and Beneatha are talking in the house, they begin to talk about Beneatha's new friend Asagai.
Beneatha wants to make sure the Asagai is comfortable around Mama and asks that Mama doesnt ask ignorant questions about Nigeria. The fact that Asagai is from Nigeria is very significant because Beneatha wants to be involved in African studies. By being with Asagai Beneatha can get a close to first hand experience on Africa.
